Bloomsburg Drops Match to Slippery Rock in Wrestling
SLIPPERY ROCK— The Bloomsburg University wrestling team fell to Slippery Rock Saturday morning, 18-17. With the loss, the Huskies move to 9-9 on the season.
In the final bout of the match, Slippery Rock's Jason Cardillo won an 11-6 decision over Frank Beasley (Oden, IL/Centralia) at 165 pounds.
The Huskies took an early lead four out of the first five bouts. To start out the match, Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley) won by decision, 1-0, over The Rock's Jerimiah Frederick at 174 pounds. In the 184-pound bout, Nate Shirk (Middleburg/Middleburg) got a 4-3 decision over Charlie Pienaar. After Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) was defeated by Andrew Joseph on a pin in overtime, Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/ Boyertown) won an 8-0 major decision over Joe Attieh to give the Huskies a 10-6 lead.
At 125 pounds, Mike Sees (Northumberland/ Shikellamy) built on the Huskies lead with a 23-9 major decision over Chris Clarke, giving Bloomsburg a 14-6 lead as a team.
Slippery Rock closed the gap in the next three bouts with wins at 133, 141 and 149 pounds. In the 133-pound bout, Sal Lascari won a close 6-5 decision over Ricky Donald (Millville/Bloomsburg), while David Pienaar won a 5-0 decision over Brad Forbes (Downingtown/Downingtown).
Bloomsburg lost another one-point decision at 149 pounds as Shawn Baglio defeated George Hickman (Wilmington, NC/Riverside), 6-5, giving Slippery Rock a 15-14 lead going into the final two bouts.
Aric Fuhrman (Spring Grove/Delone Catholic gave Bloomsburg the advantage going into the final match with a 9-2 decision over Gerald Christian at the 157-pound bout.
In the final bout of the match, Cardillo got the 11-6 decision to win the match for Slippery Rock.
